You know your business exists. Your customers know. But Google? Google acts like you don't. If you're searching your own services and finding competitors from Newmarket and Barrie instead of your own site, one of these five things is usually the culprit.
1. Your Google Business Profile is unclaimed or half-empty. For local searches — "plumber near me," "barber Keswick" — the map pack gets most of the clicks. If your profile is unclaimed, missing photos, or has three reviews from 2019, you're invisible where it matters most. Claiming and fully completing your profile is the single highest-return hour you can spend on marketing.
2. Your website is too slow. Google measures load speed and ranks fast sites higher. Most template sites we audit in York Region take 4–8 seconds to load. Modern builds load in under one. That gap alone can decide who ranks.
3. Your site never mentions where you are. If your homepage says "quality service you can trust" but never says Georgina, Keswick, or Sutton, Google has no idea you serve those areas. Location needs to be woven naturally into your pages — titles, headings, and copy.
4. No schema markup. Schema is code that tells Google explicitly: this is a local business, here's the service area, here are the services, here are the hours. Almost no small business sites have it. Yours can — and it's an unfair advantage while your competitors ignore it.
5. Thin content. A five-sentence homepage can't compete with a competitor who has a page for every service and answers to real customer questions. Content is how Google understands what you deserve to rank for.
The good news: in a market like Georgina, the bar is low. Most of your competitors are getting all five of these wrong. Fixing them — properly, once — is often enough to jump the line.
